A really nice widget set is the Gtk, the Gimp toolkit.  It's very high
level, object-oriented (despite being written in C and not C++), and looks
very slick.  If you've used the Gimp, you've seen this toolkit.  A very
nice tutorial is available for the gtk, at www.gtk.org.  It's also
completely free and open!
