Jeff, I bet you 10 grams that IF these cracker stories are true the
affected account users compromised their own accounts. IOW the cracker
gained access to the USER'S machine, either via a Trojan, worm or
other method, and usurped the PW. I VERY much doubt if the e-gold
system was compromised, so it could be an absolute WASTE of time and
resources to do anything about the e-gold system. Even the most secure
OS in the world wont keep a cracker out if he has a valid password!

Most of the stats you are "quoting" are "old" and win2k is a
SUBSTANTIAL improvement over past win systems.
As a matter of interest, the ISP where I telehouse my server has just
had a big problem. Over the last 4 days security experts have been
working around the clock to sort out a problem. Seems that crackers
got in and 4 machines were compromised, some information was stolen
and a ddos attack was launched through the compromised machines. The
security company used their hackers to "attack" the network to reveal
any further vulnerability.
Here is the interesting fact. The compromised machines were all Linux!
The security company hackers found further vulnerability that was
repaired. My win2k servers all got a clean bill of health! The
security company also told me they get LESS attacks in well
administered win servers than in other OS systems.
Anti MS prejudice is mostly just that.... Prejudice.
Cheers,
Sidd.
