The elrepo kernels *ARE* stable kernel.org kernels, pre-built for RHEL/Centos. I don't believe there are any backports done (beyond the stable patches applied to 4.5.X), I think kcompat is just messed up and can be fixed likely with a small patch (it probably already is fixed in our current kcompat.h)
