I imagine it's because you can't just save a java file as a new name 
without the possibility of breaking the compilation (if it contains a 
public class).

I don't see why it's not possible to save a xml/txt/etc file as anything 
you want...

You can rename a file via the commander I think.

I find the absence of a "save" separate to a "save all" interesting - it 
precludes using a buffer/window as a scratchpad unless you are willing to 
save that scratchpad to disk with a set name
