I like the concept of auto-centering the tool-tips. But the problem you describe above brings to mind another issue that such auto-centering tool-tips would bring: If you have multiple prototypes and it can't be determined yet which one the selected one is, how would you center the tool-tip? You would have to have a single-line tool-tip for each prototype and all of them would auto-center independently from the others.
