So is the solution as simply as not making it look like a menu, and instead
making it look like the alt-tab switcher?

Yeah, it should probably be an option.  But I cannot emphasize how much I
HATE having to constantly press enter after everything.  To exaggerate, it'd
be like duplicating a line would require a Ctrl-D and then ENTER, or to
backspace a character, you'd press backspace and then ENTER.  It's annoying
as hell, and really bad when the key-press is on the opposite side of the
keyboard from ENTER.  I'd like to minimize how often I have to take my left
hand off home-row.

I'd settle for a "numbered list" like with the Surround-With menu, or just
being able to press the keystroke again to take the "default/top" item.
Anything would be an improvement.
