It's a desktop Java app... it's supposed to be slow...

Try comparing IDEA's performance with JBuilder, NetBeans and TogetherSoft...
so far as I've been able to tell the only IDE for java that doesn't suck
from a performance perspective is XEmacs with the java integration... but
that's no fun, is it? I mean... unless you like changing settings in your
IDE by writing LISP code :)

Besides, IDEA lets you work your way without forcing you into a particular
development methodology--IBM's IDEs always seem to want to force you to work
like a 500 person shop.

Seriously, I agree that IDE performance has become a total joke in the java
world, but IDEA is really the best I've seen so far. Both JBuilder and
NetBeans allocate at least 60MB of RAM just to start up and show me a
Tip-of-the-Day. When I spoke with a salesperson from TogetherSoft she told
me (with a straight voice) that I really should be using a 2GHz CPU.. and
have somewhere between 512MB or 1GB of RAM...

I work for a "start up" company... I was lucky to get 256MB of RAM.

Anyhow, you're a developer, you shouldn't be buying boxes from DELL, you
should be putting them together with parts from a local computer show and
EBay... :)

That said, I think you'll find that, rather than buying a whole new box,
upgrade your RAM as much as your pocket book can allow. I found that what
kills most of these IDEs is the memory requirements. When your laptop
experiences a swap storm you'll know what pain is.
