I would still think that this is not a one-size-fits-all issue... cvs does
not answer everything here (or whatever version control you are
using)... everything I work on uses cvs, but there are times that I would
like to just go back to a version of the file I had prior to doing some
work....  do rely on cvs for this would require many branches, or to have
a very unstable cvs tree...
