It would still be nice to be able to quickly checkpoint your code and then rollback without going through the overhead of checking in/out. Traditionally people have done this by not saving their work but there are probably better ways to do this.

You can't, and yes, this is a very common question with new users since
IDEA's handling of file
file saving is very different from what you find in common applications.
Roughly saying, there is no distinction between the memory and file system
versions of the file.
After some time, you get used to it. Make sure to use a version control
system and check in
frequently. I think this is what they had in mind when they designed IDEA.
