I'm against an installer as well...or at least against a *required*
installer.  The current mechanism is awesome and can really only be improved
by making the configuration settings location configurable.

However, I can see how an installer would be required by those people who
can't think or by one of those companies/magazines/whatever that have a
checklist for all reviews or purchasing decisions that have a little box
that says 'installer'.  You can't convince most of these people that you
don't need an installer.

I'd suggest keeping things the way they are, but provide a little GUI app
that takes a java home location and an install path and copies the bits to
that location.  Simple and satisfies everyone.
