It's not always that cheap. For example, it will cost me $1500 to add another 256MB to my computer. That's because I've already reached the maximum amount of RAM my computer can handle, so I have to get a new computer to add more. (I realize that 256MB is pretty small these days, and I do plan on getting a new computer sometime. But not today.)
