I use IDEA on Linux, Windows XP and the Mac. So far XP seems to be the
smoothest. I'd rather they focus their efforts on running smoothly on all
3, I'd rather be on Linux or the OS X, and I don't think 1.4 has anything to
do with it. I would also rather have a JDK that works on all 3 OSes equally
well, and not have the different feels from one OS to the next.

Much can be improved, smoothed, and stabilized using JDK 1.3.1 which is much
more mature than 1.4. I see no problem with starting with the 1.3 JDK, IDEA
has done a good job of separating the 2 by allowing us to build with what
ever we want, and allowing them to run the JDK with what ever they think
will make it run well ALL the time on any platform. If they run it with JDK
1.4 then you either get differences in look and feel and behavior from OS to
OS, or one they'll have to jump through hoops to maintain the code for both
JDKs making the IDE more sluggish and heavy. I think IDEA made the right
choice and I hope they keep it that way, because obviously it's cost saving
passed on to us.

I'll tell you this, try running Netbeans and adding some jar files which you
need for your builds, like the JAXB jar file I use for XSLT, it drives the
Netbeans IDE nuts when editing XML files, because there is a conflict in how
it loads its own classes v/s how a user wants to use his/her own classes for
their own application, THAT should never happen, and IDEA does a good job of
giving us that freedom.

It's funny how sometimes we all have too much of a good thing, we have to
find the little things to nit pick on. IDEA is a very nice piece of
engineering, that's for sure!

Keep up the good work, and the good discussions.
