I much prefer IDEA's icons (old or new) over Eclipse's. The new icons are visually very aesthetically pleasing and professional looking. I'm waiting to see how they settle in as far as usability/recognition goes, but I expect them to be fine.
The only superior Eclipse icon is their sun getting eclipsed. IDEA's equivalent, the "IJ" application and project icon, could use a new design, and for that matter so could the IDEA application launcher icon (is it a blue body and gray body orbiting?).
