That should be the case.

My main reason for choosing NIS over LDAP, is that I like the fact that doing so will create all the home directories on the server that I need. It somehow seems a cleaner, more obvious solution.

Using the eBox from end does that too - create a user and allow filesharing and their home directory is created for you. Add a group and a directory for that and file sharing is enabled too. With the PDC mode, that should export the home directory etc. information for you. I believe the winbind route may well be the quickest to get what you want.

I think I'll try Ebox. If it doesn't work, then I've lost nothing save a little time.
