Make sure that the IPs your UK colleagues are getting from the VPN belong to 
the same network as, at least, one of the internal interfaces on eBox. If 
that's the case there shouldn't be any problem to ping the eBox machine as 
the eBox's firewall will treat those IPs exactly in the same way as it does 
with the other machines living in its local network.

I would like to point out that SMB broadcasts frames to announce services and 
shares. This could potentially be an issue if your VPN is not sending 
broadcast messages. Of course, the first step is being able to ping the eBox 
machine :)
