  my "validation" was little more than, "does it start and seem to
run?"  beyond that, i had no official validation strategy.

  an excellent question.  from memory (without actually going back to
my notes), i think i verified that even the latest version of
poppler-utils that came with RHEL 5.4 was *not* new enough in terms of
the "pdftohtml" utility contained therein.

  i'll go back and see how much i learned, but that's obviously an
issue since RHEL5.4 is the latest version of RHEL, so you'll have to
have special install instructions for people who are running that and
need a working pdftohtml.
