Association (edra) meeting will be held at the Salt Lake City
Hilton, June 12-16, 1996. EDRA is a multidisciplinary and
international organization of design professionals and academics

KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY PETER CALTHORPE, ARCHITECT AND PLANNER.

Recently Mr. Calthorpe has developed material for HUD's Empowerment
Zone and Consolidated Planning Programs along with a transition
document for the Clinton administration on the relationship between
land use, transportation, and community design. The central focus
of his practice is mixed-use master planning with a concern for
creating communities which are environmentally sound, economically
diverse, and socially progressive.

Mr. Calthorpe has co-authored SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES and the
PEDESTRIAN POCKET BOOK. His most recent book is THE NEXT AMERICAN
METROPOLIS: ECOLOGY, COMMUNITY, AND THE AMERICAN DREAM (Princeton
Architectural Press, 1993). This volume describes his current work
and provides extensive guidelines for transit-oriented development.

Peter Calthorpe has been named by NEWSWEEK Magazine as one of
twenty five "innovators on the cutting edge" for his work
redefining the models of urban and suburban growth in America.
He is also on UTNE READER'S list of "100 visionaries that could
change your life." Join us for what should prove to be a
stimulating beginning to our conference.

PANEL DISCUSSION ON PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PLACES: CHOICES FOR THE NEW
MILLENNIUM.

Discussion coordinator will be Dr. Irwin Altman, known for his
analysis of public and private realms in ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIAL
BEHAVIOR and CULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT. His forthcoming book is a
contemporary analysis of the use and meaning of place for
polygamist cultures.

Participant Dr. Karen Franck, co-editor of NEW HOUSING, NEW
HOUSEHOLDS, has examined the fluidity of public and private
boundaries across cultural and historical eras, with particular
emphasis on the design of nontraditional housing that supports
womens' needs.

Participant Dr. Mark Francis, co-author of THE MEANING OF GARDENS
and COMMUNITY OPEN SPACES: GREENING NEIGHBORHOODS THROUGH COMMUNITY
ACTION, embraces public participation in his designs and his
writings critique the value of public places in an era increasingly
focused upon privatization and exclusionary spaces.

Participant Clare Cooper Marcus, Professor Emeritus and co-author
of HOUSE AS A MIRROR OF SELF and PEOPLE PLACES: DESIGN GUIDELINES
FOR URBAN OPEN SPACE, has addressed a broad range of private and
public places.

TOURS:  OLYMPIC SITES AND PARK CITY; CHILDREN'S ENVIRONMENTS;
NEIGHBORHOOD REVITALIZATION; HOUSING; HISTORICAL AND MORMON PLACES;
OPEN SPACES AND ECOLOGY.

BANQUET.  STUDENT PARTICIPATION ENCOURAGED.

Subject: Re: graduate schools

I have noticed a great Web page devoted to environmental
philosophy/ethics. I can't recall the web site, but I think that it is
the Journal of Env. Ethics page. Try the University of North Texas,
Colorado State, and Tulane University where Michael Zimmerman teaches
philosophy. He may have some suggestions.
