Well, Susan, I don't believe I ever said the beliefs contained in
that message were straight from an "ecofem" textbook. They were and
are, however, my beliefs. I hardly think I fall into the category
of the "me-generation." Just because I don't espouse total vegan-
ism - don't plop me into the opposite corner!
And, frankly, if I had to worry about each and every thing I eat as
a "being" that doesn't deserve to be eaten - I just might not eat
anything! Of course, that would be an interesting diet, eh?
Sure to lose weight on that one.....

Here in Florida, the Environmental Equity and Justice Commission is
completing a two year study on Environmental Equity. They are finding
that poor people live near polluted sites.

The location of polluting sites is not a factor that is looked at by the
State in the permitting process - except to make sure that it is not
wetlands. The location of polluting industries is something that is in
the control of local zoning. Too often the concerns of citizens are
brushed aside at this stage and they are told the lie, "Don't worry.
You'll have an opportunity to challenge this in the permitting process."
That is a lie. The permitting process can only be chanllenged if the
technical components of the permit application are incorrect. Once a
site gets this far in the process, unless the citizens are rich and well
informed, it will be permitted.

The attitude of the people who permit these places is frequently
pro-business. I have heard: "Well who told them to move next to a dump?"
and "Well they are ONLY trailer people!" and more.

I know what I would do if a polluting industry wanted to move near me.
I'd raise hell! - But then I'm lucky. I've got a job and a place to live
and am reasonably educated and articulate - not to mention being a bit of
a hell raiser just on general principal!
