Dear ECOFEMers,

I thought this might be of interest to some here. It's cross-posted
from H-ASEH. Sorry about any duplicates for those subscribed to both

Subject: Technology and natural disasters

Environmental historians:

The 25th Symposium of the International Committee for the History of
Technology (ICOHTEC) is scheduled to be held in Lisbon, Portugal, August
18-22, 1998. Under the conference's general theme of "European Technology
in a Global Context," I am organizing a group of papers (at least one
session and possible two or three) around the subject of "Technology and
Natural Disasters." I would like to invite environmental historians who
might be working on a topic that fits this theme to participate.

I can imagine papers ranging from topics related to flooding, earthquakes,
and hurricanes to wild fires, insect infestations, and disease epidemics.
My contribution, for example, will focus on an aspect of earthquake
engineering, a topic which takes into recognition the fact that Lisbon is
the site of one of the early modern world's most devastating earthquakes
in 1775.

If you would be willing to participate in the ICOHTEC symposium by
presenting a paper dealing with "Technology and Natural Disasters,"
please submit to me by email a topic and brief paragraph describing it by
October 14. I will be meeting with the conference organizers a day or two
later and would like to be able to report what interest there is at that
time.

Papers should not take longer than 30 minutes to present, 20 minutes being
the ideal. I would urge you to prepare a somewhat longer, fully
documented version for submission to _ICON: The Journal of the
International Committee for the History of Technology_. Should we have
sufficient quality papers, I will work with the editor to see if we can
arrange a special issue.
