The increased incidents of violent behavior in males is a place to start...not
to end. It is a continuum. The men who aren't outright killing people aren't
functioning in the same culture as women (and we ARE speaking about cultures
here, not people). Clearly, the male culture in America is more violent than
that in other industrial nations, and clearly it is more violent than that of
women...to include violence on the level of psychological abuse and abuse of
the environment.
For instance, there is growing concern about the number of infants that suffer
some brain injury (and long term learning disabilities) from being
shaken...and most of the ones doing the shaking are young fathers who have had
no training in nurturing behaviors. It is time to teach them better. It is
time to say, "Don't you even do that the first time." Better yet, it is time
to change our own culture so we can raise boys in a way that they can become
men who do not need to be told. Can we do that? I wonder, how would be
honestly react to a man who was not angry?

Stephen Biddulph is a most insightful Australian author and commentator on
just such issues. Though some of his assertions occasionally border on the
deterministic, as the mother of young sons I have found his work to be both
pragmatic and optimistic. Raising Boys and Manhood are two texts of
particular note.
