New Cargo: The Global Business of=20
Trafficking in Women

The Centre for Refugee Studies will soon publish an issue of Refuge on
"trafficking in women."=20

The issue is intended to provide a space for analysis of the social and
economic factors generating and sustaining the coercion and
utilizationof
vulnerable women in the global business of sex trafficking-with a focus
on
refugee and immigrant women. Researchers and practitioners from academic

circles and grassroots organizations working to counter trafficking in
women are urged to submit papers which will illuminate refugee and
immigrant women's experiences with trafficking in a socioeconomic
context,
with particular attention to the relevance of United Nations human
rights
treaties, such as CEDAW, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms
of
Discrimination Against Women, and the Covenant on Social and Political
Rights. Papers will include a section to devoted to "strategies for
international systemic change" involving local and international social,

economic, legal and political systems.

Contributions with abstracts are invited. They must be received not
later
than September 30, 1998.

Papers should be double-spaced, and referenced in proper academic form.
They should not exceed 16 pages or about 4000 words. Short papers of
about
900 words are also welcome. Word processed submissions my be sent on
disc
or by email.
