I LOVE this concept.  First encountered it (in words) working with
young African American kids, referred to each other as cousins,
referred to an older woman they knew as Grandma.  I didn't get it at
first, thought they were making it up, I guess, pretending.  Until one
of them told me I was her Auntie in god's way.  What an amazing
feeling, especially for someone like me who has no extended family to
speak of.  

I realized at that point that people I have met around the world and
around the US are my extended family.  I have a family in Italy, a
couple families in Brazil. have grandparents in Minnesota who, in the
two years I have known them are closer to me than any blood
grandparents I have will ever be.
