At the time, I was simply nauseated. But you know what I did? My friend
Sandra was holding my hand saying "you're not leaving..." and the woman
with the clipboard and the loudspeaker came over and (not in the
loudspeaker) said "Sir, you'll have to get on the sidewalk [with all the
other men]." All I could do was to quip: "Well, they used to make black
people go to the back of the bus too..." a weird and paradoxical analogy
but she pretty much left me alone after that. There were some others
saying it was just for women, but I ignored them. Strangely enough, when
I went to a Take Back the Night Gathering in Great Falls, Montana in the
middle of a snowstorm (there were like 30 people there compared to 500 in
Missoula), the organizer gave special thanks to all the men present and
said how happy she was to see them there....
