If you are interested in a career in research, don't limit your job search to 
academic positions, but consider government agencies also. There are 
opportunities for rewarding research with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 
Department of the Interior's Geological Survey and Fish and Wildlife Service, 
the Environmental Protection Agency, and others. When I was completing my 
studies in graduate school, for some reason, I never considered government 
work, and my advisor and other committee members never mentioned it as a career 
option.
