Description

Earlham College is currently seeking qualified candidates for the Director of Outdoor and Environmental Education. This is a full-time, 12-month administrative faculty position. Salary is commensurate with experience, including a full benefits package.


Since 1971, the Outdoor Education program at Earlham has a nationally recognized and strong history of developing future leaders in outdoor and environmental education and is considered one of the oldest programs of its kind in the country. The program operates courses and trips regionally, nationally and internationally including yearly expeditions to Utah and Ontario. The College is seeking a leader who, working collaboratively, can articulate and enact a compelling vision for the integration of outdoor and environmental education within our sustainability program and more broadly with the liberal arts.


Major program areas include the August Wilderness summer pre-orientation program, the Miller Farm sustainable agriculture program, the certificate program in Outdoor Education, and student-led outdoor-based physical education courses.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

This position works collaboratively with other administrative faculty as part of the broader Sustainability Program at Earlham. Specific duties include: * Overall vision, direction and coordination of all major program areas including the August Wilderness summer pre-orientation program, student-taught outdoor-based physical education classes, the designation in outdoor education, and the Miller Farm sustainable agriculture program. * Staff hiring, training and risk management coordination for all program areas.
   * Curriculum design and development for all program areas.
* Teaching courses connected to the Outdoor Education program, including the Advanced Field Practicum May Term and Outdoor Trip Leadership. * The possibility to teach courses and workshops connected to the Miller Farm sustainable agriculture program depending upon experience and qualifications. * Purchasing, inventory and maintenance of all field equipment including management of the outdoor education center and indoor climbing wall. * Coordination of activities and associated maintenance and facility needs of the Miller Farm garden area (currently approximately 2 acres).
   * Faculty Adviser to the Outdoors Club.
   * Other duties as assigned.


Experience & Qualifications

* A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree in a closely related field is strongly preferred. * Significant instructional and logistical experience in outdoor/environmental education, including expedition-based trips preferably in the college environment. * A varied range of technical outdoor skills, certifications and competencies specifically related to rock climbing, canoeing and backpacking is required along with a current Wilderness First Responder certification (or concrete plans to attain certification). * Experience and interest in small-scale sustainable agriculture and farm-based education program development is also highly desired. * A demonstrated track record of successful program development and oversight along with strong teaching and administrative skills.
