I've heard that in the days before pond liners were available, people used
clay and/or ducks to seal their ponds. You might check old garden books.
I think I saw something about sealing ponds in "The New Garden" by Richard
Sudell; it was published in 1936 by Scribner. I checked it out of our local
library a few years back, so it should be available by interlibrary loan if
your library doesn't have it.

<snip> I've got a leaky pond and someone suggested that animals will turn
the sandy soil into muck and seal the pond. They suggested cows but
we don't have cows and i'm thinking geese or ducks. We will probably
give it a try next year. Ponds are great, even our small pond is a
good places to be on a summer day. <snip>
