My easy answer would be to the degree that more good was done
than harm to all living things now and in the feature. As to how to
determine that degree depends on the situation and in some
situations it may be impossible to determine. So how about using
common sense and a sense of responsibility , in each situation.
Of course this would require that our society put a high value on
social and environmental responsibility...I am starting to sound
like a politition! :-) So to answer the question we would first have to
reeducate ourselves to think of...OURSELVES ,NOT AS ME,
BUT AS ME, US , THEM AND EVERYTHING ELSE! We in this
society think that "I" means only me ...
that to me is the problem.
But how do we teach this??? Come to think of it , it's not a matter
of teaching it's a matter of personal realization that what is good for
the majority of the things through which I survive is the best thing
to do. And the best way to get people to see things this way is to
make it profitable for them to do so. If ethics just means doing the
right thing because its right, than ethics is nothing. Ethics have to
be seen as what's best for the majority is best for me. And the
only way I can think of to do this is to convince people that they do
not survive without the survival of all the rest of us. It's a viewpoint
that should be learned as a child , if it's to be believed....And if you
understand what I just said, would you please explain it to me? :-)
