Thanks for saying this Kathryn. Gene's attitude really got to me too.
Along rivers that flood a lot, it's easy to feel anything but pity for the
people who lose their houses and head right back when the waters receed. I
never understood that. Until I learned that those areas were never flood
plains until people upstream built huge barriers so they wouldn't flood.
Then small normal floods turned into catstrophies.
Not to mention all the concrete and tar on upsteam banks, and where the
rain travels to the river, keeping the water from soaking in like it was
meant to. Some people do build homes in stupid places but I think most are
just trying to live as their predecesors did for generations before.
What's dumb about that?
