Yes. We require only minimal refrigerator space, and most of what 
we use it for could be replaced with a cold room if we lived rurally. 
The last two rental places have, unfortunately, come with large 
fridges. At least the one we have now is more energy efficient than 
the 20 year old monster at the last place. We had to have our own 
appliances at the place previous to the last two. We bought a small 
fridge. We ended up buying it from the salesman who could get his 
mind around the idea that a family of four would not require a 
humoungous fridge for basic survival.

I could envision living without a fridge as long as I lived somewhere 
that I could put in  a root cellar or cold room. Even better if I could 
ensure cooling through the hottest part of the summer with ice 
from an ice house.
