Even most of us who know it is a lie stay on the wheel. The wheel will only
stop spinning when fuel/natural resources run out or we finish poisoning
ourselves and most of us die. The conundrum is similar to expecting a child
to stop eating sugar even though his teeth are rotting once he has
discovered candy.

We are pretty predictable. After survival and reproduction we want to feel
important. Ad writers play to that need. Our perceptions of importance
become molded. Who among us does not own things we do not need, but have
acquired because it "just makes me feel good."

Perhaps our society will one day become spiritual, in the sense that some
say our native Americans acted in a spiritual manner toward their
environment. Until that happens, I figure about the best I can do is be
true to my beliefs and hang on tight to my common sense. I like Gary
Snyder's attitude and also his question: "Why survive?"

"I am gently mad myself and resolved to live cleanly." --Ralph Waldo Emerson
