I was just thinking out loud.

If your trading partner is not using FTP or does not have an address to FTP
to, can you circumvent using VANs?  You could FTP using a dial-up, however,
you then need to pull the information for your trading partner, otherwise
don't you have to start worring about routers and firewalls? ISDN is
possibly a good solution, but your trading partners still have to be able to
accomodate.
