Hospitals' charity care spending grew $1.7 billion in '99, AHA says
U.S. hospitals provided $20.7 billion in uncompensated care in 1999, up $1.7
billion from the previous year, the AHA reported today. That $20.7 billion
represents 6.2% of the total expenses at America's community hospitals, up
slightly from 6.0% in 1998, Over the past 10 years, charity care costs in
the U.S. have increased by 71%, or $8.6 billion, even as the percentage of
total expenses devoted to charity care each year has held steady at just
over 6%. The data comes from the 2000 AHA Annual Survey.
