It may help to get a basic understanding of the X12 syntax.  If you want
the ultimate reference and don't mind purchasing the documents from
DISA, you can refer to X12.5 and X12.6.  Or, for a less authoritative
but more accessible view you can look at the X12 Technical Tutorial on
my web site.
