I have used both at times, I prefer Textpad for the bookmarking capability,
but Ultraedit has some similar functionality.

Textpad, while it can show hex, cannot edit in hex mode.

Textpad can goto a byte # that you specify. This is a very useful feature
when dealing with fixed length record files. Also Mercator traces point to
errors by byte offset from the beginning.

Textpad has a 'diff' like file comparator built in. Both products support
regular expression syntax in the 'find' dialog, which is critical.

Somehow, I suspect that the person who asked the question didn't know what
they were asking for. I got they feeling thay were looking for something
like viewing an XML file in Internet Explorer or XML spy.

For EDI there is nothing like this, as far as I know. The only thing similar
I have seen is the forms capability of Gentran:Server NT where you can
create a form to display and edit the data in labled fields.

The reason why this is possible in XML is that there is the DTD (or whatever
Microsoft decided to rename it.) The closest thing we have to a DTD in EDI
is a SEF file.

It would be interesting to have a tool that could take a SEF file and use it
to generate labled forms from which to display end edit X12. The problem is
that you need Either Edisim or Edifecs to create SEF files, and both are
expensive products. I wonder if any other products are capable of using SEF
files.
