But won't that make this new list "X12-L" instead of
"EDI-L"?

at Yahoo! Groups
Harold, let me try and answer your questions
you have raised regarding the
copyrighting of the X12 Standards and of
discussions on the EDI-L listserve,
two very separate issues. Yes, DISA, in its
capacity as secretariat to the
ASC X12 standards organization, does hold
the copyright for the X12
Standards - operative word here is "for"
X12. DISA is the administrator,
both organizationally and technically, for
the X12 organization. We manage
the standard's development, maintenance and
publication and hold the
copyright to protect the contributions of
the countless volunteers -
companies and individuals - who have jointly
produced the Standard.
As to the appropriateness of copyrighting
discussions or any other
contributions to the listserve, I agree with
you. That would be
unacceptable and, importantly, not something
DISA would consider for this or
any other discussion venue it hosts. Again,
we at DISA extend the offer to
provide this support for the free and open
discussion of all issues related
to EDI and its implementation. This fits
very closely with DISA's stated
mission - support for the development and
promulgation of electronic
business standards. THAT is DISA's vested
interest. Oh, and we will not
attach advertisements to participant
messages or sell the participant list!

Thank you all.
