The software for EDIINT does not have to be expensive.  We use Softshare ECS
which includes AS2, AS1 and AS3 for a price that is extremely reasonable.  

I remember the first pocket calculator I bought cost $249.  It added,
subtracted, multiplied and divided.  Then somebody came out with one for
$175.  Later, one for $95.  Then a new brand called Casio came along and for
$24.95 theirs did everything.  Yesterday a supplier sent me one with their
name one it, for free.

Don't buy more than you need, and don't discount the possibility of using a
brand that is not a household name.  Yet.

I don't think the "connecting directly to multiple AS2 servers" is a big
deal, but the expense of the software is tragic. Perhaps no so much a step
back as a step forward into a pile of dog doo. There are a few open source
AS2 projects in the works out there, and when some of them are completed, I
think AS1,2,3... will be much stronger. The middle-men are eating all the
benefits.
