So in short, the transportation industry uses RFID in many ways, just not the same way the consumer products group and EPCglobal use it, and that's why they consider it a "blind-spot"?

Travis RFID is currently used for Automatic equipment identification, automated border crossing, automated toll payment, yard/equipment management, equipment tracking, exchanging vehicle information between the equipment and a fixed site for weigh station by-pass or vehicle engine (and other mechanical/electrical equipment) monitoring, tire management and the list goes on....... All of those applications have a good ROI for the industry, depending on the type of operations (LTL, TL, small package, etc). As for tying in freight information, that is already done today. When the shipper sends the carrier a 204, 211 or 215 with the shipment information (or XML, flat file, proprietary file), the carrier can send back 214's to indicate where the shipment is. TL carriers using satellite systems can provide in-transit information, LTL and small package carriers provide information as the freight passes a scanning location. RFID will not change that. The ROI is in sending the carrier information electronically, vs. the paper bill of lading that they get today. Just look at the information you can get today from your friendly small package carriers like FedEx and UPS when you ship a package. Will RFID change that? It will be difficult for transportation to get an ROI on RFID tagged shipments until a majority of shippers use the technology. Standards need to be set across industry, not just retail vs. automotive vs. computer industry, etc.... One LTL carrier has over 100,000 shippers, and the small package carriers deliver to every address in the US. Industry standards will add cost to the supply chain.......
