John, We have a Sr. EDI applications developer position available at our office in Long Island, New York. If you have the following skills you can convert your ranting into a happy smile.

To everyone on the list: Thanks to all of you who have sent me e-mail with you remarks. It has been very rewarding to see that I was not that far off with my feelings on the issue when I "ranted" my term is "vented" the other day. You are correct when it comes to unemployment numbers. While I was on unemployment I was part of the unemployment number that is reported to the public. Now that my unemployment is over I am no longer on the list. I still do not have a job but I am no longer being reported. I had a friend who told me that the only help that I would get from the State was training to work in a nursing home or training to be a truck driver. Three weeks into my unemployment I am called to the unemployment office and offered training in these two areas. I have been in information systems since I left college in 1980. Driving a truck or working in a nursing home as a nurses aid is not an option for me. And there has been no real effort to help in any other area. As far as money goes the agencies are out of cash. When I lost my first job after 13 years because my firm moved most of the production facility to Mexico I could not even get assistance for additional training because the agency was out of money. Now the issue is when I go on interviews the people are impressed with my background and education but when they review my salary history I become in a "wink" of the eye "over qualified" for the position. My wife encouraged me to put in for a State position and I did. Ended up at a prison and before a hiring group of three persons. During the course of the interview the head person says "Can we talk". I tell her yes please do so. To the dismay of her other two hiring members she tells me that she has studied my resume for weeks and she see's that I am a "problem" solver. Well, we "don't" have problems here at this prison so I am not going to hire you. So I did not get the position. They sent me to see their "computer" person and when he looked at my resume he said "Wow, you worked for Unisys! Man you worked for McDonnell Douglas too!!!!!" "I only have my high school degree and don't have any college yet, and I do all of the computers here at the prision", "No wonder she did not offer you a position here, you are over qualified". 6 weeks later three inmates went over the wall and escaped. But I have to remember that there are no problems at the prison. Again, thanks to everyone for your remarks. Positive and negative. This is what this forum is about and I am glad that all of you are here. Somehow we still manage to survive considering the fact that that unemployment is reaching all time low levels in years, while outsourcing is reaching all time high levels. How do you explain that? _____ From: [email protected] on behalf of Karen Brasier Sent: Wed 3/22/2006 11:27 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [EDI-L] <Tech> OSTRPT message -- off topic rant. I humbly disagree with there being no sense in decrying this situation. We can change what happens in the USA. Realize this is a global list, but none of the other countries have 'open borders' policy as we do....Corporations love cheap labor at the expense of the American Workers. We can and will change this policy, making it less attractive to 'outsource' for the corporations. Many of us have "lost" jobs to outsource services, some in other countries. There is no more sense in decrying this situation than there was 100 years ago when blacksmiths began to be unemployable because of Henry Ford. Smart blacksmiths went to work for Ford. Smarter ones purchased stock. Progress happens. The book, "Who Moved My Cheese" was a best seller, partly because it is thin, but mostly because it addresses this very issue. It is time we, the IT community in the western world, start evaluating our futures. Is the job you're doing the only thing you can do? Better learn something new. Are you counting on employment for 100% of your income, now and in the future? What was that your grandmother said about eggs and baskets? After work, I teach people how to diversify their income sources. If you want to know more, contact me via my business email: acd<at>ix.netcom.com. For one who has been unemployed for the last 6 months now after 16 years in the EDI community I am tired of all of the support that we give to the request for information that is from the off-shore area. Sure, I might know the answer but why offer if for free when I am now done with my severance package, my unemployement and now am living on my savings. My job was outsourced and the automotive sector for supply parts OEM is going to China. Jobs are hard to come by and any help would be a plus. So for me I say what is your rate and I can help you with your problem. Better start to see what is going around or you will be in the same boat as me without a job and the only prospect is to move from my family and friends. Off shore was great for my company but it sure was not great for me and my family. I can tell you that after doing automotive EDI for 16 years for the off shore companies they were not there to offer me a job when I needed it. Not really bitter but just trying to deal with reality and what I will be doing with the rest of my life since it has been six months with nothing.
