But I agree, if you have one product and/or a limited number of trading
partners, it makes perfect sense.

Actually, it's not that bad. You print an order summary, 'cause you
don't care what store ordered how many. Then you
get a bulk pick, print labels that are used to pick and pack, and then
release the 810 and 856 en masse. This is how people
who don't have $100,000 for translators, $100,000 for maps and $100,000
for guys like Art and me (and that's a conservative
number) do business. Let's say you're Mom and Pop Toy Co, LLC. You
sell one item that JCP buys for one store segment.
Would you invest any sort of money in infrastructure, or would you
outsource? The cost to enter the market is much lower and
the time to get over the wall much faster with a web solution for a
small vendor with limited sku to the mass merchandisers.
