Let's not forget that ANSI ASC X12 EDI was *designed* to reduce the number
of characters required to transmit a business document... having been born
at in the Pre-Intermet days when telecommunications was the only convenient
way for "the masses" to do business electronically... and telecommunications
at that time was controlled by a very (very) small group of licensed
monopolies and was very (very) expensive relative to today's highly
competitive bandwidth market.

As I said before, I really believe XML format was invented to make it easy
for putative programmer-types to check their work... since they could always
open an XML-format file with an ordinary text editor and have a good chance
to 'figger out' what the document said. Number of characters was not a
consideration at that time.. since both disk storage and communications
bandwidth had become so inexpensive by then.

Oh, yeah, there's also the fact that the major EDI Translator/Mapping
Software firms never ever realized a complete fullblown system was a total
waste of John Q. Public's time and money when Johnny was typically
exchanging but a handful of documents. Consequently, that 'first' trading
partner was often prohibitively expensive to implement.

Hmmm... error..... in the last paragraph I used the past tense. I should
have used the present tense, since that hasn't changed much at all.
