Having been around in that era... what happened was that there was a
freely available, open source reference implementation (sendmail). If you
were writing an email transport and it couldnt talk to sendmail, your
implementation was deemed to be broken. Simple as that.
There should be an open source AS2 that is declared to be the gold
standard. Geez, these days you could make it a Linux based VMware player
virtual machine that anyone could download. Do that and you get a
distributed, market driven, low cost certification test. And of course,
Drummond has to find a new day job.
BTW, just because someone has "certified" in a lab that two AS2
implementations can talk to each other it does not mean they will do so in
the real world, on *your* real production network. As an example, we came
across an FTP problem that was caused by the interaction of our firewall,
with a specific FTP server, and specific clients, only in PASV mode.
