We do this frequently. There are many advantages (and some disadvantages).

Benefits:
All documents and labels can be printed in advance.
No printing required in the shipping area.
Less work (decision making) in the shipping area.
ASN is _ready_ and just needs the shipper to release it.

Drawbacks:
System has to be able to calculate carton contents.
Any shortages have to be entered (need more stock).

We see a huge variation in goods shipped.

In the clothing industry some POs have multiple pre-pack lines which have to be
consolidated to match a pre-packed carton from China. This would be very time
consuming to scan & pack, especially if the boxes are already packed and
sealed.

There are lots of similar scenarios where taking the decision process away from
the shipping department is a good thing.

We have no problem building ASNs from scanned data, but to date, we have only
done this for a few clients. All other clients use the ASNs and labels that
are generated by the system.
