I often get asked the question: "Why don't all the retailers (buyers) use
the same order, invoice and ASN segments & elements?"

I guess this thread answers that question. Organizations use the documents
to support different order management and logistics methodologies.

Michael is right with his reply....

The number of cartons and weight and BOL and other such information
is at the SHIPMENT level in the "normal" SOPI structure.

Also, we use a DC for all of our orders - i.e. nearly everything we
buy is shipped to our warehouse/DC. From there, our merchandise
control group distributes goods based upon need, sales, upcoming
ads, store requests, etc.. When we order, say, 10000 widgets, it's
not set in the PO that X number go to store 1, Y to store 2, etc..
Instead, all 10000 units go to the DC and then we use our own trucks
to ship X to store 1, Y to store 2 and so on.

We do have a few vendors that drop ship directly to the store and we
send one PO per store (350 stores, 350 POs) and receive one ASN per
store/per shipment (350 stores, 350 ASNs).
