Craig / Michael,
The great thing about the ASN structure is that you can report the weight, lading quantity and other summary information at BOTH the shipment and order levels. Many retailers (buyers) do have this requirement of reporting at both levels. The order level data would have value for an automated cross-docking operation. > Given my druthers, if I had to convey invoice number and -department number - > and assuming these are in fact assigned on a "per purchase order" basis - > in an ASN, I think I'd choose to use an (O)rder level HL loop SUBORDINATE to > the pack (standard pack) or Item (pick-and-pack) loop. I have never seen that one before. It could be done. There would be a lot of repetitive information regarding the order and potentially opening the door to inconsistent information. For example, reporting multiple instances of the invoice # opens the possibility of reporting the number incorrectly. For those who are concerned with data volume, duplicate data means more data being transferred. _______________________________________________ Regards, Todd LaBonte Phone: 231-933-7212 Fax: 231-933-7236 e-SupplyLink . exceptional Supply Chain Solutions _____ From: Craig Dunham [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 19, 2007 6:36 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [EDI-L] Re: ASN - pack vs. item level differences? Michael is right with his reply.... The number of cartons and weight and BOL and other such information is at the SHIPMENT level in the "normal" SOPI structure. Also, we use a DC for all of our orders - i.e. nearly everything we buy is shipped to our warehouse/DC. From there, our merchandise control group distributes goods based upon need, sales, upcoming ads, store requests, etc.. When we order, say, 10000 widgets, it's not set in the PO that X number go to store 1, Y to store 2, etc.. Instead, all 10000 units go to the DC and then we use our own trucks to ship X to store 1, Y to store 2 and so on. We do have a few vendors that drop ship directly to the store and we send one PO per store (350 stores, 350 POs) and receive one ASN per store/per shipment (350 stores, 350 ASNs).
