Hey guys - what about flow down requirements from government contracts. These need to be issued and tied to individual POs and clearly seen by the supplier because if they don't follow the rules of a specific requirement they could spend some time in the Big House in Leavenworth. I used to work for GE Aircraft Engines where we ran into this constantly both on 850s as well as 830s.
In the beginning (over 20 years ago) we sent so much text that a one item purchase order would create a Purchase Order that was 12 pages long! Our suppliers called it "Gone With The Wind". And in addition to Government Flow Down requirements we had literally hundreds of "Standard Remarks" for POs that were all referenced by a 3 character code. Now obviously any given PO would only use a relatively few of those. Eventually, we got smart enough to create a database that kept track of every Std. Remark issued to every supplier on every PO. So all we had to do was reference the 3 character code on an 850. If a PO was issued to a supplier that included a Std. Remark that they had never received before then that night the text of that Std. Remark would be sent to them via snail mail. I'm neither claiming creation of the system nor that it was elegant. But the needs of some businesses to convey lots of extraneous details with an 850 are real world business requirements that they ignore at their peril. When I left GE six years ago they were expanding use of the internet and one of the suggestions was to give suppliers access to all of their Flow Down and Std. Remark data within a Supplier portal. But it still required that we send at least references to the government contract or Std. Remark on the 850. There is at least one supplier of GE Aircraft Engines on this list. They can give some input as to what it was like to be on the receiving end of all of those details.
