the sef is a machine readable and manipulative file that contains all of the document definition information. for example, there is a section with the segments in each document. then another section has the elements for each segment. and several other sections have the characteristics and validation lists for the elements. you can include business logic into a sef. at it's root, it's just another document. the ig is more readable, more user friendly.
