Lissa, A .sef file is just another format of presenting an EDI guide. It has a lot of advantages over other formats such as word document, pdf or prints; but unfortunately SEF files are not used by all vendors.
But, on an EDI implementer's side of view, receiving a SEF file is preferable to other formats because it's machine readable (parsable by a program). Therefore it saves us the step of having to manually convert the guideline's instructions from verbal language to computer logic (where mistakes can happen). Keep in mind that the SEF file's raw text format is not user-friendly to users trying to view it because of the machine readable format. So if you do decide to convey your EDI guidelines as SEF files, your trading partners would need some sort of SEF reader. A free SEF reader can be downloaded from www.edidev.com --- In [email protected], [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > How is a .sef file different from an EDI guide? > > Do vendors prefer .sef or something like a word document (they can download and print) with the details of the segments/data elements/application business rules? > > Thank you, > Lissa > ...
