Greetings Ron, I had the very same scenario with a major electronics retailer. No new attributes just the version upgrade. It caused me even more angst since our legacy EDI Translator did not have the newest version and I had to create a workaround. And yes, it was a 3rd party testing company that had a ridiculous contract and really didn't test substantially. These 3rd party companies seem to take the 'Partner' out of 'trading partner'. It bothered me as it does you but in the end, I came to understand that perhaps SOME of their trading partners used the newer version with it additional elements or perhaps a major partner REQUIRED them to upgrade so they are just standardizing and passing it on to you (rolls downhill). Also, although I generally disagree with the 3rd party concept, some of these companies have thousands of partners and it just isn't feasible for them to test with each of their partners (thus the 3rd party involvement).
In the final analysis, it seems to boil down to who is the supplier and who is the customer. It is good to sell things and to have a job and therefore, management will always side with the customer and ask that you accommodate them. With the upgrade, there are some minor changes to the data sent. All those changes can be supported within version 4010, with the same segments and same elements. This is not the first time that trading partners ask us to upgrade from one version to a minor version above without taking any advantage of new features of the newer version. Besides the cost of my time, their time and no foreseeable benefits, there is another issue for me: testing the upgrade will be done by a 3rd party company and we need to pay for that test. So, I'd like to think about this with all of you to as for whom to blame: - A brilliant manager on the customer side? - DISA coming with new versions of EDI every other week - 3rd party companies that offer upgrade services What else?
