Not to interrupt the  normal Friday message forecast (mostly fluffy, with 
occasional drivel and a fair chance of BS) ...

This kind of situation really cannot be addressed at the "EDI" level.  This 
is a job for the oft-criticized "Manager" (aka "Boss") (and some other words 
one would not use in a family-friendly environment).

I have three separarate clients who have solved very similar problems by 
analyzing the costs and benefits of participating in similar programs 
"offerered" by customers, and politely declined after doing so.

True, it can be hard to say but sometimes "no" is what should or must be 
said. .. and deciding when to say it and actually saying it are why managers 
draw paychecks.
