Nice analysis.

I'm in the flat file camp too and I was asking myself if there were
legitimate reasons for that.  Now I remember, there are.

When I use XML its because I have to for one reason or another.  I've not
yet ever found a reason to deliberately switch from flat file to XML.  Its
probably why companies with mature EDI systems haven't chucked it all in for
XML instead.  Why fix what isn't broken?  Why send the SWAT team when the
county sheriff's deputy and a soda can get the job done?
